Our take

Lea Michele, Chris Colfer, Amber Riley and Kevin McHale lead a club of outsiders, with Jane Lynch's cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester doing her best to shut them down.

Why watch It sold music like a pop act: its covers moved more than 36 million digital singles by late 2011. It won six Primetime Emmys and four Golden Globes, and its stories about coming out, bullying and belonging were unusually frank for primetime in 2009. Best for musical theatre fans and anyone who wants a big, sincere, occasionally ridiculous sing along.

What to know

Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan created Glee for Fox. Brennan first imagined it as a feature film. The pilot aired on 19 May 2009, the first season began properly that September, and the show finished on 20 March 2015 after six seasons, 121 episodes and more than 700 musical numbers. Fox gave it the coveted slot after Super Bowl XLV in 2011, and the cast toured live after the first two seasons, with a concert film released in August 2011.

The show evolves a lot. Season four splits its time between a new generation at McKinley and Rachel and Kurt chasing Broadway dreams in New York, and later seasons divided critics more than the first.

Where to start

Begin with the pilot and season one, the run that won the show its audience and its awards. If the first season clicks, season two widens the ensemble, promoting Naya Rivera’s Santana and Heather Morris’s Brittany. A revival for Disney+ and Hulu, with the three creators returning, is in the works.
