Why watch Few procedurals have lasted this long or travelled this well: 15 seasons on CBS, then a second life on Paramount+ that has continued into a 19th season with a 20th ordered. The format is dependable, the cases are dark, and the ensemble is the real draw. Suited to true crime fans who like their villains caught by the end of the hour.

What to know

Created by Jeff Davis, Criminal Minds premiered on CBS on 22 September 2005 and ran for 15 seasons until 19 February 2020. Paramount+ revived it as Criminal Minds: Evolution on 24 November 2022, counted as the 16th season; season 19 premiered on 28 May 2026, and a 20th season has been ordered.

The franchise spun off twice on CBS: Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior in 2011, cancelled after 13 episodes, and Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, which ran two seasons from 2016.

Where to start

Season one introduces the original unit and the rules of profiling. Viewers short on time can jump to Evolution, which gives enough backstory to follow and shows how the series has changed for streaming.
