He finds work at Planet Express, an interplanetary delivery company run by his distant nephew Professor Farnsworth, alongside one-eyed captain Leela (Katey Sagal) and the larcenous robot Bender (John DiMaggio).
Why watch Matt Groening's other great cartoon mixes fast gags with real science-fiction ideas and, more often than its reputation suggests, genuine heartbreak. It has won six Emmy Awards and nine Annie Awards, plus a Writers Guild Award for episodes including "Godfellas". It has been cancelled and revived several times, which tells you something about its fans.
What to know
Groening created the series and developed it with David X. Cohen while working on The Simpsons, and it launched on Fox in 1999. After Fox cancelled it, reruns on Adult Swim kept it alive, and four direct-to-video films followed from 2007 to 2009. Comedy Central then revived it for new episodes from 2010 to 2013. Hulu ordered 20 more episodes in February 2022 and another 20 in November 2023; new episodes resumed on 3 August 2026, and a further production season of three extended specials is expected in 2027. The voice cast includes Phil LaMarr as Hermes and Lauren Tom as Amy.
Where to start
The pilot, “Space Pilot 3000”, sets up everything in 22 minutes. After that, “Jurassic Bark”, “Godfellas” and “The Luck of the Fryrish” show the range from silly to devastating.
