Our take

Twins Brandon (Jason Priestley) and Brenda Walsh (Shannen Doherty) move from Minneapolis to Beverly Hills when their father is promoted, and start at West Beverly Hills High among wealthier, faster friends: Kelly, Steve, Donna, Dylan, Andrea and David. Over 10 seasons the group moves from high school through college and into adult life, with romance and scandal at every stage.

Why watch It popularized the teen soap, turned Priestley and Luke Perry into teen idols and made Doherty and Jennie Garth household names. It also took on subjects network television of the era often avoided, from date rape and addiction to AIDS and racism. Watch for early-1990s nostalgia, or as the template for nearly every teen drama that followed.

What to know

Darren Star created the series and Aaron Spelling produced it through Spelling Television. It ran on Fox from 4 October 1990 to 17 May 2000, after working titles including Doing Time in Beverly Hills and Class of Beverly Hills. The first season rated poorly; the turning point came in summer 1991, when Fox aired new episodes while most other series were in reruns, and audiences found it.

The cast changed a great deal over the decade. Garth, Tori Spelling, Brian Austin Green and Ian Ziering were the only actors to stay for the whole run. The series launched a franchise of six shows, beginning with Melrose Place, whose first episode featured several of the 90210 cast. In 2019 Fox revived it as BH90210, a six-episode series that premiered on 7 August and was cancelled that November.

Where to start

The pilot introduces the Walsh family and their new school. For the show at the height of its fame, go to the summer 1991 episodes that made it a hit.
