Our take

Why watch The mysteries are fine, but the reason to watch is the rapid-fire banter between Roday Rodriguez and Hill, packed with 1980s pop-culture references and running jokes, including a pineapple hidden in nearly every episode. Light, quick and endlessly rewatchable, it suits anyone who wants comfort viewing with a puzzle attached.
What to know
Steve Franks created Psych for USA Network, where it ran from 7 July 2006 to 26 March 2014 over eight seasons. Although the show is set in Santa Barbara, it was filmed in White Rock, British Columbia, which stood in for the California coast. The supporting cast includes Timothy Omundson as the rigid Detective Carlton Lassiter, Maggie Lawson as Detective Juliet O’Hara and Corbin Bernsen as Shawn’s father, Henry.
The guest list leans into the show’s love of nostalgia, with William Shatner, Cybill Shepherd, Cary Elwes and Ally Sheedy among the visitors. A two-hour musical special aired in December 2013. The story continued in three films: Psych: The Movie (2017) on USA Network, then Psych 2: Lassie Come Home (2020) and Psych 3: This Is Gus (2021) on Peacock.
Where to start
The pilot sets up the con neatly, and the first season shows the formula at its loosest.
