Our take

Bored with ruling Hell, Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis) moves to Los Angeles and opens a nightclub. When a murder case brings him into contact with LAPD detective Chloe Decker (Lauren German), the first human immune to his charm, he becomes her civilian consultant, solving cases while working through his family troubles with a therapist (Rachael Harris).

Why watch Tom Ellis's devilish charm carries a procedural that grows into a story about free will, guilt and family, with God and assorted angels as recurring characters. The case-of-the-week format makes it easy to dip into, while the long arcs reward bingeing. Its fans campaigned to save it after Fox cancelled it, and Netflix gave it three more seasons. A light, flirtatious pick for fantasy and crime fans alike.

What to know

Tom Kapinos developed the series from the DC Comics character created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg. It was produced by Jerry Bruckheimer Television, DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Television and premiered on Fox on 25 January 2016. Early seasons were filmed in Vancouver before production moved to Los Angeles for season three.

Fox cancelled the show in May 2018 after three seasons. A month later, following a fan campaign, Netflix picked it up for season four, and it ran there for a further three seasons until 10 September 2021. Tom Welling joined in season three as Lieutenant Marcus Pierce, Inbar Lavi arrived as Eve in season four, and Ellis also played Lucifer’s twin, Michael, in season five.

Where to start

Season one sets up the premise and the Lucifer and Chloe partnership. If the procedural element feels thin, stick with it: the mythology deepens from season two, and the Netflix seasons are more serialized.
