Our take

Five young offenders doing community service in a bleak corner of London are caught in a freak electrical storm and come away with superpowers that mirror their personalities: one can turn back time, one becomes invisible, one hears thoughts. Then their probation worker attacks them, and the gang find themselves covering up a death.

Why watch Misfits won the BAFTA for best drama series for its first series, and it made superpowers awkward, crude and funny. The writing is sharp, and the original cast, including Robert Sheehan, Iwan Rheon, Lauren Socha, Antonia Thomas and Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, went on to wider fame. Best for viewers who like their genre television foul-mouthed and inventive.

What to know

Howard Overman created the series and wrote every episode of the first two series, and Clerkenwell Films produced it for E4. It ran for five series from 12 November 2009 to 11 December 2013, with location filming around Southmere Lake in Thamesmead, south-east London. Sheehan left after series two, and Joseph Gilgun arrived as Rudy Wade; after series three, Rheon, Thomas and Socha departed, replaced by Karla Crome, Nathan McMullen and Matt Stokoe. The show also streamed on Hulu in the United States, where it was among the service’s most-watched programmes.

Where to start

Series one, episode one, and through at least series two: the original five, and Sheehan’s Nathan in particular, are the heart of the show. Later series have strong episodes, but the cast changes make them a different show.
