Privacy policy
The Remote (dontlosetheremote.com) is published by Loveseyland Ltd., Toronto, Canada. This policy explains what information we collect when you use the site, how we use it, and the choices you have. We do not sell your personal information.
What we collect
Newsletter sign-ups
If you subscribe to The Dispatch, we store your email address so we can send you the newsletter. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any issue, and your address is removed from the list when you do.
Your Queue and region
The Queue (your watchlist) and your region preference are stored only in your own browser, using a feature called localStorage. They are never sent to our servers. Clearing your browser data clears them, and we have no way to recover them.
Ask the Remote
Questions typed into Ask the Remote are answered from our own data. Unanswered questions are kept so editors can see what readers want to know. The question text is not linked to you.
Usage data
We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how the site is used: pages viewed, approximate location, device and browser type, and how visitors arrived. IP addresses are anonymised. Logged-in editors are excluded. You can block analytics with a browser extension or by declining non-essential cookies where the consent banner appears.
Cookies
Our hosting uses LiteSpeed Cache, which may set a small technical cookie so pages load faster. It holds no personal information. Analytics and advertising cookies are described above and below.
Video embeds
Trailers are embedded from YouTube through youtube-nocookie.com. No cookies are set until you press play. Once a video plays, Google’s privacy policy applies to that video.
Advertising
When ads run on the site, they are served by Google AdSense, which uses cookies to show ads based on your visits to this and other sites. You can opt out of personalised ads through Google Ads Settings or aboutads.info. Visitors in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland are asked for consent before non-essential cookies are set.
Emails you send us
If you write to the desk, we keep your message so we can reply and keep a record of corrections and submissions.
How we use it
- To send The Dispatch to people who asked for it.
- To understand which stories and tools readers use, so we can make the site better.
- To answer your messages and act on corrections and submissions.
- To show ads that fund the publication, when ads run.
Retention
Newsletter addresses are kept until you unsubscribe. Analytics data is retained by Google for 14 months. Emails are kept for as long as they are needed to deal with the matter they concern, then deleted. Queue and region data never leave your browser.
