Why watch Married... with Children was a deliberate rejection of the warm family sitcom of the 1980s: crude, cynical and very funny about failure. It was the first prime-time series on the new Fox network and remains its longest-running live-action sitcom, at 11 seasons. Entertainment Weekly later ranked it among its new TV classics. For viewers who like their comedy rude and unrepentant.

What to know

Michael G. Moye and Ron Leavitt created the series for Fox, where it aired from 5 April 1987 to 1997, running 259 episodes. Its theme is Frank Sinatra’s recording of “Love and Marriage”. The series was produced by Columbia Pictures Television and taped before a studio audience.

Amanda Bearse plays Marcy throughout. David Garrison’s Steve leaves in season four, and Ted McGinley arrives as Jefferson, giving Al an unlikely best friend. The show’s running gags, Al’s four touchdowns for Polk High, his anti-feminist club NO MA’AM and the Bundy curse, became its signature.

Where to start

The early seasons establish the family’s dynamics, but the show hits its stride by season three. Any episode works on its own, so viewers can sample freely.
