Why watch A time-travel premise grounded in ordinary life, it uses each trip into the past as therapy rather than spectacle, and Toronto plays itself throughout. The show sold well abroad, airing on SOAPnet in the US, and drew remake interest. Suits anyone who likes warm, funny drama about second chances.
What to know
Jana Sinyor created Being Erica, produced by Toronto’s Temple Street Productions for CBC. It ran from 5 January 2009 to 12 December 2011: four seasons and 49 episodes. After the first season, which aired in winter, the show moved to a fall slot for the rest of its run.
Its formula, a session with Dr. Tom followed by a trip into Erica’s past, grew more ambitious as the series went on, with the later seasons expanding the rules of the therapy and of Dr. Tom himself. BBC Worldwide handled international distribution. A British version, You Again, was announced in 2010 but never made. Sinyor has described the four seasons as reaching a natural conclusion.
Where to start
Season one. Each episode works as a self-contained trip, but the bigger story of Erica’s life builds steadily, so watch in order.
