Our take

Why watch Mad Men won the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series in each of its first four seasons, the first basic cable series to take the award, along with a Peabody and five Golden Globes. It rewards patience: the 1960s arrive slowly, in office politics and changing manners, and the drama lies in what characters leave unsaid. For viewers who like character study over plot, and period detail done with precision.

What to know

Matthew Weiner created the series, which AMC aired for seven seasons and 92 episodes from 19 July 2007 to 17 May 2015. Lionsgate Television produced it. Weiner wrote the pilot in 2000 as a spec script while on the staff of Becker, and it later won him a job on The Sopranos.

Jon Hamm plays Don Draper, with Elisabeth Moss as Peggy, Christina Hendricks as Joan, John Slattery as the partner Roger Sterling, Vincent Kartheiser as the ambitious account man Pete Campbell, and Robert Morse as the eccentric founder Bert Cooper. Kiernan Shipka grows up on screen as Don’s daughter Sally across the run, and Rich Sommer plays the media man Harry Crane.

The agency itself changes as the decade does, through mergers, departures and a breakaway firm, so the office politics never stand still.

Where to start

Season one, from the pilot. The show builds slowly and depends on accumulated detail, so this is one to watch in order rather than sample.
