Why watch This is the show that made forensic science prime time entertainment, and at its peak it was CBS's highest rated series. It ran 15 seasons, won six Primetime Emmys and spun off a franchise. Its glossy, high contrast look and lab montages became its signature. Best for viewers who like a self contained case each week, with characters you get to know slowly.

What to know

Anthony Zuiker created CSI, and Jerry Bruckheimer produced it. ABC, NBC and Fox all passed before CBS bought it, and when Disney’s Touchstone Television pulled out as co producer, the Canadian company Alliance Atlantis stepped in. It aired from 6 October 2000 to 27 September 2015, ending with a feature length finale, Immortality.

The leadership changed over the years. Grissom left during season nine, Catherine took over, and Laurence Fishburne joined as Raymond Langston. Ted Danson then arrived as D. B. Russell, later joined by Elisabeth Shue as Julie Finlay. The show launched several spin-offs, beginning with CSI: Miami and CSI: NY, and a follow up series, CSI: Vegas, ran from 2021 to 2024.

Where to start

Season one gets the team and the formula in place quickly. For the show at its peak, the Grissom era of seasons one to eight is the core of the series, including the Quentin Tarantino directed two part season five finale, “Grave Danger”.
