Our take

Stripped of their fortune, Johnny and Moira Rose and their grown children, David and Alexis, move into a roadside motel in Schitt's Creek, the small town Johnny once bought as a joke. Created by Eugene and Dan Levy, the CBC comedy follows the family as they slowly put down roots among the locals who never expected them to stay.

Why watch It is a comedy that grew warmer without losing its bite, anchored by Catherine O'Hara's Moira and a generous view of small-town life. A slow-building audience turned into a record-setting Emmy sweep in its final year. Ideal for anyone after kindness with punchlines, and a fine introduction to Canadian television for viewers abroad.

What to know

Eugene Levy and his son, Dan Levy, created the series, which premiered on CBC on 13 January 2015 with two back-to-back episodes. Produced by Not A Real Company Productions, it ran for six seasons and 80 episodes, ending in 2020, with Pop TV as its original US home. Dan Levy served as showrunner.

The final season won all seven major comedy Emmys in 2020: comedy series, writing, directing (Andrew Cividino and Dan Levy) and all four comedy acting awards, for Catherine O’Hara, Eugene Levy, Annie Murphy and Dan Levy. No series had swept every acting category in a single year before, and its nine total wins that year, counting two Creative Arts awards, set a record for a comedy.

Where to start

Start at the beginning. The show is built on slow change, and the payoff of the final season, which closes with the episode “Happy Ending”, depends on watching the Roses arrive at their lowest.
