Why watch Wild Cards is a throwback to the light, banter-driven network mystery, built on the push and pull between a by-the-book cop and a grifter who reads people for a living. It was CBC's highest-rated new series of 2024, and Jason Priestley and Martin Sheen turn up as figures from Max's past. Best for viewers who want a case of the week with charm rather than grit.
What to know
Michael Konyves is the showrunner, with Noelle Carbone as head writer. The series is a co-production between CBC and The CW, made by Blink49 Studios, Front Street Pictures and Piller/Segan, and it shoots in Vancouver. The first season of 10 episodes premiered on 10 January 2024 on CBC and CBC Gem, a week ahead of its US launch on The CW. Season two arrived on 8 January 2025, a third season followed in 2026, and the show has been renewed through a fourth. Priestley plays George Graham, Max’s imprisoned father, Sheen plays a con man tied to the family, and Tamara Taylor joined in season three as Max’s mother, long presumed dead.
Where to start
Start with the pilot, which sets up the partnership and the deal, then enjoy the standalone cases. Max’s family story builds across seasons, so watching in order pays off.
