Why watch A contemporary reimagining of the long-running Australian soap Prisoner, it kept the setting and some names but went darker and more cinematic. It ran for eight seasons and 100 episodes and travelled widely, retitled Wentworth Prison in the UK. A strong choice for viewers who like ensemble drama with high stakes, long arcs and villains worth fearing.

What to know

Wentworth was developed by Lara Radulovich and David Hannam from Reg Watson’s original concept, and produced by Fremantle Australia for Foxtel. It premiered on SoHo on 1 May 2013 and ended on Showcase on 26 October 2021 with its 100th episode, across eight seasons (the last split into two parts).

The cast turned over boldly. Cormack left after season four, Rabe joined in season two, and Leah Purcell, Susie Porter and Rarriwuy Hick arrived in season six, keeping the series fresh deep into its run. It was filmed in suburban Melbourne, at Clayton and later Newport.

Where to start

Season one. Bea’s arrival is the natural way in, and the early seasons build the alliances and grudges that pay off later. Fans of the original should watch for knowing nods to Prisoner‘s characters.
