Why watch A Canadian take on the Austrian hit Kommissar Rex that has been a Citytv fixture since 2019, through seven seasons and a change of canine star. The cases are self-contained, the tone is warm, and St. John's is shot with real affection. Ideal for family viewing and for anyone who has ever trusted a dog's judgment over a person's.
What to know
Hudson & Rex premiered on Citytv on 25 March 2019. It is produced by Shaftesbury and Pope Productions in association with Citytv and Beta Film, which distributes it internationally, and is filmed in St. John’s.
The show has weathered real upheaval. Diesel vom Burgimwald, the dog who played Rex from the start, died in 2024, and relatives of his took over the role. John Reardon stepped away for most of season seven; the story sent Charlie abroad to search for his missing brother, and Luke Roberts joined as Detective Mark Hudson. Citytv renewed the series in May 2026 for a 12-episode season with Reardon back as Charlie, alongside Nguyen, Hanchard, Justin Kelly as tech analyst Jesse Mills, and Roberts.
Where to start
Season one for the setup of Charlie and Rex’s partnership; the cases stand alone, so any episode works as a sampler.
