Every major US streamer has stocked up for October, but the horror is spread across seven services, and each one has a different idea of what scary means. Prime Video has a new Stephen King series from Mike Flanagan; Peacock has a Friday the 13th prequel; Shudder releases a new original film nearly every Friday. Here is what is new or newly added on each platform through Saturday 31 Oct, with dates from the platforms’ own listings.

Prime Video

The month’s headline horror series is already streaming. Carrie, Mike Flanagan’s eight-episode adaptation of Stephen King’s debut novel, premiered on 7 Oct. Amazon’s synopsis follows Carrie White (Summer H. Howell), raised in isolation by her mother Margaret (Samantha Sloyan), who enters public high school after her father’s sudden death and faces a viral bullying scandal as her telekinetic powers emerge. Flanagan wrote the series and directed four episodes; King is an executive producer. Matthew Lillard and Amber Midthunder are in the cast.

Also on Prime Video:
– Scream 7 (from Fri 16 Oct). The latest Scream film arrives on the service.
– Last One Laughing UK: Halloween (Fri 23 Oct). A comedy special in which, Amazon says, “laugh and you are out, scream and you are out.”
– Chucky, seasons 1 to 3 (from 4 Oct).
– Library additions from 1 Oct: Candyman (1992), Child’s Play (1988 and 2019), Hereditary, Midsommar, X, Pearl, MaXXXine, Killer Klowns From Outer Space, The Witch, Krampus and the Universal classics Dracula, Frankenstein, The Bride of Frankenstein and The Invisible Man.

Peacock

Crystal Lake (Thu 15 Oct) drops all eight episodes at once. The Peacock and A24 series is a prequel to Friday the 13th, with Linda Cardellini as Pam Voorhees, whom Peacock calls “the grief-stricken mother of Jason Voorhees.” NBCUniversal says the series streams exclusively on Peacock.

Peacock’s 1 Oct additions read like a horror syllabus: the original Friday the 13th and Part II and Part III (useful homework for Crystal Lake), Scream 1 to 3, Paranormal Activity 1 to 3, Saw, The Ring, The Grudge, Train to Busan, 28 Weeks Later, Last Night in Soho, Krampus and Rob Zombie’s Halloween films. Night Swim followed on 5 Oct.

Hulu (Huluween)

Hulu‘s Huluween hub, also available to Disney+ bundle subscribers, mixes new arrivals with FX‘s long-running anthology.

  • American Horror Story: 13 (FX). New episodes on Thursdays; two episodes on 15 Oct, with the season finale on Thu 29 Oct.
  • Hokum (now streaming). An Irish folk-horror film starring Adam Scott, in which a novelist is drawn into tales of an ancient witch haunting an inn’s honeymoon suite.
  • Clown Panic (Mon 12 Oct). A Hulu Original documentary about the 2016 clown-sighting panic that began in a small South Carolina community.
  • Companion and Wolf Man (Sun 18 Oct). A lake-house thriller of “love, deceit, and revenge”, and a family trapped in a farmhouse by an unseen creature.
  • Phony (Tue 20 Oct). A Hulu Original series in which a high school student suspects his mother has been replaced by an imposter after a car accident.
  • Also in the hub: Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, SOULM8TE, Barbarian, Hereditary, Midsommar and the special Family Guy: Happy Hell-o-ween. For younger viewers, Disney flags Coraline, ParaNorman and Hocus Pocus.

Shudder

Shudder’s “Season of Screams” schedule, published by AMC Networks, has a new release almost every week:

  • V/H/S/Mixtape (Fri 9 Oct). A found-footage anthology in which music and sound become the source of terror, with segments from Ernest Dickerson, RZA, David Moreau and Renee Zhan, plus GWAR.
  • Hallowarrior (Fri 16 Oct). The last girl on Earth fights off a raider gang on Halloween eve.
  • The Cycle (Fri 23 Oct). A dead man’s estranged daughter uncovers his secret.
  • Joe Bob’s Halloween House Party (live Fri 23 Oct, 9 p.m. ET; on demand from 25 Oct). Joe Bob Briggs and Darcy the Mail Girl host a live double feature.
  • FANGORIA Chainsaw Awards (live Sun 25 Oct, 9 p.m. ET). Devon Sawa hosts.
  • Big Baby (Fri 30 Oct) and Hunting Matthew Nichols (Sat 31 Oct). A writer’s nightmares about a baby-masked killer bleed into reality; a filmmaker searches for the brother who vanished 20 years earlier.

Netflix

Netflix‘s October list leans on library films and lighter Halloween fare.
– From 1 Oct: Psycho, Psycho II and Psycho III, The Sixth Sense, Crimson Peak, Evil Dead, Hush, The Strangers, Split, The Menu and Friday the 13th.
– Haunted Hotel, season 2, and Is It Cake? Halloween, season 2 (9 Oct). Katherine and her family face more paranormal problems at their hotel, and cake artists making Halloween treats to fool the judges.
– Cocaine Bear (Wed 14 Oct). The horror comedy about a bear and a lost stash.

HBO Max

  • The Pet Cemetery Murders: A Ghost Story (Sundays from 11 Oct). A three-part HBO Original docuseries reopening a 1985 Louisiana cold case, which WBD says “unearths a haunting history of bloodshed and long-buried trauma.”
  • Strange: Junji Ito’s Tales for Sleepless Nights, season 1 (from 2 Oct).
  • From 1 Oct: the A Nightmare on Elm Street films, Freddy vs. Jason, The Exorcist, The Shining, Poltergeist, Trick ‘r Treat, Final Destination 3, House on Haunted Hill (1959), plus Coraline and ParaNorman for families.

Paramount+

The Peak Screaming collection, which Paramount+ keeps in the app year-round, gathers its Halloween titles. New this month:
– Wildling (Tue 13 Oct) and V for Vengeance (Mon 19 Oct), two films.
– Ghosts, season 6 Halloween special (Thu 29 Oct).
– Dexter: Resurrection, season 2 (Fri 30 Oct), on the Premium plan only.
– From 1 Oct: It Follows, Drag Me to Hell, Doctor Sleep, Crimes of the Future and Blink Twice.
