Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, and the new theatrical releases for Friday, Oct. 30 lean more toward mountains, war and slow-burn dread than slashers. Two of them are Netflix films getting a theatrical run before they stream, which matters if a big screen is part of the plan: the window between theatre and couch is a few weeks, not months.

Everest: The Other Side

Disney lists Oct. 30 for the new documentary from Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, whom Disney describes as the Oscar-winning filmmakers of Free Solo. It follows elite ski mountaineers Jim Morrison and Hilaree Nelson as they attempt to climb and ski Everest by the North Face route from China, a line Disney says only five people had summited. Disney says the film was “made for the IMAX screen.” The Disney+ title page lists it as PG-13 and “only in theaters” for now.

The Mosquito Bowl

Peter Berg directs this Second World War drama based on Buzz Bissinger’s book The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II. Netflix says it follows four college football stars who trade their jerseys for Marine uniforms after Pearl Harbor and face combat in the Pacific. Nicholas Galitzine plays John McLaughry, Bill Skarsgård plays Bob Bauman, Ray Nicholson plays Tony Butkovich and Tom Francis plays Dave Schreiner. Berg also appears as General Simon Buckner.

Netflix says the film opens in select theatres Oct. 30 and starts streaming on Netflix Nov. 25.

Gentle Monster

Marie Kreutzer wrote and directed this thriller starring Léa Seydoux as Lucy, a concert pianist who moves her family to a country house so her husband Philip (Laurence Rupp) can recover from severe burnout. Netflix says an early-morning police visit upends their lives and leaves Lucy torn between her love for Philip and her fear of what he may have done. Catherine Deneuve plays Eloise, and Jella Haase co-stars.

It opens in select US theatres Oct. 30. Netflix says it starts streaming Nov. 18 in Canada, the US, the UK, Australia and New Zealand, so most readers outside the US will meet it on Netflix.

The Only Living Pickpocket in New York

After opening in New York and Los Angeles on Oct. 23, Noah Segan’s crime film goes nationwide in the US Oct. 30, according to Sony Pictures Classics. John Turturro plays Harry Lehman, an aging pickpocket working a city that has largely swapped cash for cards. While caring for his disabled wife, he steals and fences a valuable USB stick by accident, and has a limited time to return it before a vengeful crime family comes for him. Giancarlo Esposito, Will Price, Tatiana Maslany, Victoria Moroles and Steve Buscemi co-star.

Still playing for Halloween

For straight horror on a big screen, last week’s arrival is still the main new option. Warner Bros. files DC Studios’ Clayface, directed by James Watkins and starring Tom Rhys Harries, under horror, and it opened Oct. 23. For families, LAIKA’s stop-motion Wildwood, released in the US by Fathom Entertainment, is in its second weekend.

Coming next

Searchlight Pictures opens Wild Horse Nine on Nov. 6, according to Disney. John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell play two CIA agents sent from Santiago to Easter Island shortly before the 1973 Chilean coup, with Steve Buscemi as MJ.
