Halloween week in the US is heavier on true stories and reality than on horror. Netflix has a three-part docuseries about Matthew Perry, Hulu has Parker Posey running a mob-movie reality competition, Apple TV launches the serial-killer drama Nocturne and Peacock adds Minions & Monsters. HBO Max has two new originals, and Prime Video has a pair of international films.

The lead pick: The One About Matthew Perry (Netflix, Tuesday 27 October)

Netflix describes The One About Matthew Perry as the first in-depth documentary about the Friends star. The three-part series is directed by Emmy winner Mary Robertson for Maxine Productions, part of Sony Pictures Television, and Netflix says it is told by the people who knew Perry best, drawing on unreleased family photos and videos.

The participants include his sister Mia Perry Bowick, his friend of more than 40 years Roger Castillo, actor and longtime friend David Pressman, and Warren Littlefield, the former NBC Entertainment president who greenlit Friends. Netflix also lists Kevin Pollak, The Whole Nine Yards director Jonathan Lynn and E. Martin Estrada, the former US attorney who led the prosecution connected to Perry’s death. Netflix says the series traces his path from rising comedic star to beloved figure, including his private struggles.
