Crystal Lake, the new series that landed on Crave on Thursday 15 Oct, takes the Friday the 13th franchise back to its beginnings and puts Jason Voorhees’s mother at the centre. All eight episodes are streaming now in Canada, which makes it one of the season’s ready-made Halloween binges. Here is what to know before you press play.

What it is about

According to NBCUniversal, the series follows Pam Voorhees (Linda Cardellini), a single mother who cannot move past her grief after her young, sickly son Jason drowned in the town lake almost a year earlier. When two strangers turn up at her door asking about her past, it sets off what the studio calls a disturbing chain of events, and leaves the people of Crystal Lake asking “just who is Pam Voorhees?”

Bell Media, which carries the series on Crave, describes it the same way: a prequel to the Friday the 13th franchise, built around a mother who has been unable to shake her grief.

The framing matters for fans. Both descriptions present the series as an origin story told from Pam’s side, rather than a new run of camp-counsellor killings, and she is a character longtime viewers will recognize by name.

Who is in it

Cardellini leads the cast as Pam. NBCUniversal lists William Catlett, Devin Kessler, Cameron Scoggins and Gwendolyn Sundstrom, who plays Grace, as series regulars, with Callum Vinson, Nick Cordileone, Joy Suprano, Danielle Kotch and Phoenix Parnevik in recurring roles.

Who made it

Crystal Lake comes from A24. Brad Caleb Kane created the series and serves as writer and executive producer. The executive producers also include Victor Miller, alongside Marc Toberoff, Robert M. Barsamian, Robert P. Barsamian, Stuart Manashil, Tyson Bidner, Michael Lennox and Roy Lee.

Three directing teams split the eight episodes, according to NBCUniversal:

  • Episodes 1 to 3: Michael Lennox
  • Episodes 4 to 6: Celine Held and Logan George
  • Episodes 7 and 8: Quyen Tran

How to watch in Canada

In the US, NBCUniversal says Crystal Lake streams exclusively on Peacock. In Canada, it is on Crave, where Bell Media lists it as a series premiere with all eight episodes released on 15 Oct.

There is no weekly wait, so you can pace it however you like. Eight episodes split neatly into two long evenings, or one episode a night through to the following Friday. The official trailer is on Peacock’s YouTube channel.

If you want more of the same

If Crystal Lake puts you in the mood, Crave has more horror-leaning originals on the way this month. Yaga, the Baba Yaga thriller with Carrie-Anne Moss and Noah Reid, premiered on Crave on Friday 23 Oct with two episodes, then continues weekly.

Outside Canada

The series reached other English-speaking markets in the same month as its Canadian launch. In the US, Peacock released all eight episodes on Thursday 15 October. In the UK, Sky’s title page lists Crystal Lake on Sky Atlantic and its streaming service NOW, with all eight hour-long episodes available at once as a box set. In Australia, Stan announced in July that the full season would arrive on Friday 16 October, all episodes at once, as a Stan exclusive. US readers can compare it with the rest of the season’s scary-movie options in Halloween Horror, Streamer by Streamer, and Australian and New Zealand readers in Halloween Horror Down Under, by Platform.

The franchise, in the episode titles

Sky lists the eight episode titles, and each borrows from the film series: “Camp Crystal”, “Part II”, “Part III”, “A New Beginning”, “The New Blood”, “Kill Them, Mommy”, “Friday…” and “The Final Chapter”. Peacock notes that 12 Friday the 13th films have been made and that Betsy Palmer played Pamela Voorhees in the 1980 original, the role Cardellini now takes on. According to Peacock, the show also expands on minor characters from that first film, including Claudette, “Crazy” Ralph and Officer Dorf, the last of whom Cameron Scoggins plays here.

For a refresher before or after the series, Peacock says the first three films, Friday the 13th (1980), Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981) and Friday the 13th Part III (1982), are on the service in the US all October. Victor Miller, who wrote the original film according to Stan, is an executive producer on the series. Peacock also notes that creator Brad Caleb Kane was co-showrunner of It: Welcome to Derry, another prequel to a horror property.

Linda Cardellini’s earlier work

Peacock’s own rundown of Cardellini’s career runs from Freaks and Geeks (Lindsay Weir) and ER (Samantha Taggart) to Mad Men (Sylvia Rosen) and the Scooby-Doo films (Velma Dinkley). Dead to Me, in which she starred opposite Christina Applegate and James Marsden, streams in full on Netflix, which lists all three seasons on its title page.
