Why watch Few shows have committed so hard to a structural gimmick, and fewer have made it pay. The ticking clock makes every cliffhanger feel earned, and the show won the Golden Globe for best drama series in 2004 and the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series in 2006. It also drew sustained criticism for its depictions of torture and of Muslims, so it plays as both a thriller and a time capsule of post-9/11 television.

What to know

Joel Surnow and Robert Cochran created 24 for Fox, where it premiered on 6 November 2001, produced by Imagine Television and 20th Century Fox Television. Eight full seasons were joined by the TV film 24: Redemption, which aired in November 2008 and bridges seasons six and seven, and by a 12-episode limited series, 24: Live Another Day, which ran from 5 May to 14 July 2014 and brought the total to 204 episodes. A spin-off, 24: Legacy, lasted a single season in 2017.

Where to start

Begin at the beginning. Season one opens at midnight on the day of the California presidential primary, with Bauer protecting Senator David Palmer (Dennis Haysbert) from an assassination plot while his own family is in danger, and it establishes every rule the show later bends. Viewers short on time can jump to season five, the run critics praised most, which forces a presumed-dead Bauer out of hiding after he is framed by terrorists with friends in government.
