Our take
Chicago financial adviser Marty Byrde has been quietly laundering money for a Mexican drug cartel. When a partner's skimming is discovered, Marty saves his own life by promising a bigger operation, and moves his wife Wendy and their two children to Missouri's Lake of the Ozarks, where local criminals, the FBI and the cartel all close in.
Why watch It is a high-pressure crime drama in which every solution creates a worse problem, and the Byrde marriage becomes the most dangerous partnership on screen. Laura Linney makes Wendy's transformation chilling, and Julia Garner won three Emmys as Ruth Langmore, the local who becomes Marty's sharpest ally. Best for viewers who liked Breaking Bad and can handle sustained tension.
What to know
Bill Dubuque and Mark Williams created Ozark for Netflix, where it ran from July 2017 to April 2022 across four seasons, the last released in two parts. Jason Bateman, who plays Marty, also executive produced and directed a number of episodes, winning an Emmy for his directing. Although set in Missouri, the series was filmed largely in Georgia.
The supporting cast grows season by season: Lisa Emery as the formidable local heroin grower Darlene Snell, Felix Solis as cartel boss Omar Navarro, and Charlie Tahan as Ruth’s cousin Wyatt. Its blue-tinted cinematography became the show’s visual signature.
Where to start
The pilot does a great deal of setup in a single hour and is the essential entry point. The story is fully serialized, so watch in order; give it until the end of the first season, when the Byrdes’ place in the Ozarks is fully set.
