Why watch A rare comic lead for Yakusho, one of Japan's most respected screen actors, written by Kankuro Kudo, one of Japan's busiest television writers. It is a sharp, affectionate satire of fame and the entertainment business, and eight episodes make it an easy weekend watch. Suits anyone who enjoyed Yakusho in Perfect Days and wants to see his lighter side.
What to know
Netflix released all eight episodes on 22 October 2026, each running roughly 43 to 57 minutes. Kankuro Kudo wrote the series, and Fuminori Kaneko, Takuya Sakaue and Atsushi Watanabe direct. It is produced by THE SEVEN in association with ROBOT, with music by Shin Kono.
The ensemble around Yakusho is strong: Kento Kaku plays Tetsu Okamoto, a playwright in a creative slump, Kenichi Matsuyama is chief assistant director Kazuki Kawashima, and Yoh Yoshida plays Yoko Nonomura, Gen’s ex-wife and now the head of a talent agency. Yumi Kawai plays his daughter Emma, Hayato Isomura a theatre troupe star, and comedian Masatoshi Hamada his longtime rival, Daiya Mibu.
Where to start
Start at episode one. The comedy builds through recurring characters and running jokes, so the series plays best in order, ideally across a few nights.
