Our take
An ancient virus released from melting ice begins turning people into blood-hungry predators. Physician Luther Swann races to understand the outbreak while his best friend Michael Fayne becomes one of the first transformed, and society starts to split into human and vampire camps. Ian Somerhalder and Adrian Holmes lead the cast.
Why watch It treats vampirism as a public-health emergency rather than gothic romance, which gives it a different flavour from most of the genre. Reviews were mixed: some critics enjoyed it as a fun B-movie stretched to series length, others found it thin. It suits horror fans who like outbreak stories, and Canadian viewers curious to spot Ontario locations. Its single season ends unresolved.
What to know
V Wars adapts the anthology books and comics edited and written by Jonathan Maberry and published by IDW. William Laurin and Glenn Davis created the series and served as showrunners, and Netflix ordered 10 episodes in April 2018. It is a largely Canadian production: filming began in Sudbury and Cambridge, Ontario, in June 2018 and wrapped in Toronto that October.
Besides Somerhalder and Holmes, the cast includes Laura Vandervoort, Peter Outerbridge, Michael Greyeyes, Jacky Lai, Kimberly-Sue Murray and Kyle Breitkopf. All 10 episodes arrived on Netflix on 5 December 2019, and the series was cancelled after one season on 30 March 2020.
Where to start
There is only one season, so start at the beginning, with the understanding that it closes on open threads that will not be resolved. Viewers who want more of the world can go back to Maberry’s anthologies, which run to four volumes.
