Our take

An anthology about feuds that spiral out of control. In the first season, a near miss in a parking lot sets struggling contractor Danny Cho against unhappy entrepreneur Amy Lau. The second season moves to a California country club, where a young couple film their boss and his wife in a vicious argument and try to use it.

Why watch Lee Sung Jin writes rage as both comedy and tragedy, and the first season's mix of pettiness and pathos earned it eight Emmys, including acting wins for Steven Yeun and Ali Wong, plus three Golden Globes. The second season swaps in Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, Cailee Spaeny and Charles Melton. It suits viewers who like dark comedy with sharp edges.

What to know

Lee Sung Jin created Beef for Netflix after a bidding war for the series. Hikari directed the pilot and several other episodes of the first season, which premiered at South by Southwest on 18 March 2023 before all 10 episodes arrived on Netflix on 6 April. Joseph Lee, Young Mazino, David Choe and Maria Bello fill out the first season’s cast, and Bobby Krlic wrote the score.

The second season premiered on 16 April 2026 with an entirely new story and cast. Youn Yuh-jung plays the country club’s billionaire owner and Song Kang-ho appears as her husband, while Finneas O’Connell takes over the music. It earned 16 nominations at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards.

Where to start

Either season works on its own. The first is the more celebrated and the purer version of the idea, so start there; the second shows how the format can stretch to new characters and a wealthier battleground.
