Our take

Why watch It trades the parent show's apartment set and studio audience for a single-camera family comedy with more warmth than snark, and it lets the rest of the Coopers become full characters rather than punchlines. Zoe Perry and Lance Barber give the parents real depth, and the final season leans into drama. It suits families, and Big Bang viewers curious about where Sheldon came from.

What to know

Chuck Lorre and Steven Molaro created the series from an idea Parsons brought to the Big Bang Theory producers; Parsons is also an executive producer. CBS aired a preview of the pilot on 25 September 2017, and the full first season began on 2 November 2017. The story runs from 1989 into the mid-1990s, following Sheldon from high school to East Texas Tech and, eventually, toward graduate school.

CBS announced in November 2023 that the seventh season would be the last, and the one-hour finale aired on 16 May 2024. Over the run the focus widens: Georgie’s romance with the older Mandy McAllister becomes a major storyline, and it continues in the spin-off Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, which premiered on 17 October 2024.

Where to start

The pilot is the right entry point: it sets up Sheldon’s first day of high school and the family dynamic in 20 minutes. Viewers who know The Big Bang Theory well will find the finale ties the two shows together.
