Our take

Six students, all but one of them freshers, who applied late for halls end up sharing a house in Whalley Range, attending the fictional Manchester Medlock University. Why watch Fresh Meat comes from Jesse Armstrong and Sam Bain, the writers of Peep Show, and has the same sharp ear for embarrassment, but it is warmer and allows its characters to change over four series. It catches student life honestly, from debt and deadlines to hangovers, and the ensemble includes several actors who went on to bigger things. A good pick for viewers who liked The Inbetweeners or Peep Show.

What to know

Armstrong and Bain created the series for Channel 4, where it began on 21 September 2011 with an episode directed by David Kerr. The fictional university is loosely modelled on Manchester Metropolitan University. A second series of eight episodes started in October 2012, and a third followed in November 2013.

After talk of a film in the wake of The Inbetweeners Movie, the writers chose a fourth and final series instead, filmed in 2015 and broadcast in February 2016 as the housemates’ last year. The series follows them from freshers’ week through to finals, job hunting and what their degrees are worth, so the arcs reach a genuine ending.

Where to start

Watch from the first episode: the show is built on the housemates’ relationships, particularly Kingsley and Josie’s, and the payoff depends on following them through all four years.
