Our take

Maddie Nears wakes up as a spirit at her own high school in Split River, Wisconsin, with no memory of what happened to her. Peyton List leads this supernatural mystery as Maddie joins the other ghosts trapped on school grounds and leans on her living best friend Simon, the only person who can see her, to investigate her disappearance.

Why watch The hook is clever: the dead cannot leave the school, so the afterlife plays like detention without a final bell. Critics singled out List's lead performance, and the show balances real grief with a sense of fun, digging into secrets that span decades of students. It suits teens and adults who like a serialised whodunit with a supernatural twist and a well-drawn ensemble.

What to know

Megan Trinrud and Nate Trinrud created the series, adapting their own graphic novel written with Maria Nguyen. It premiered on Paramount+ on 9 March 2023, with season two following on 30 January 2025 and season three on 28 January 2026. A fourth season was ordered in March 2026. The first season was shot in Vancouver between August and November 2022.

The ghosts are the heart of it: Milo Manheim as Wally, who died during a football game; Sarah Yarkin as the sardonic Rhonda; Nick Pugliese as Charley, Maddie’s first friend in the afterlife; and Josh Zuckerman as Mr. Martin, a former science teacher who runs an afterlife support group. Kristian Ventura plays Simon, and Jennifer Tilly joined in season three as the school’s new superintendent.

Where to start

Begin with season one, which is built around a single question, what happened to Maddie, and introduces each ghost’s own death story along the way. Later seasons widen the mythology of the school itself.
