Our take
At a country house party at Chimneys, a prank goes wrong and a guest is found dead. Lady Eileen 'Bundle' Brent (Mia McKenna-Bruce) refuses to let the matter rest and follows the clues to a secret society known as the Seven Dials, while Superintendent Battle (Martin Freeman) and her parents (Iain Glen and Helena Bonham Carter) look on.
Why watch Chris Chibnall, the writer behind Broadchurch, adapts one of Agatha Christie's lighter, more playful novels and keeps the tone brisk and stylish rather than grim. Critics found it short and sweet rather than top-tier Christie, but the performances, especially McKenna-Bruce as a sleuth with plenty of nerve, carry it. A good pick for a weekend of period mystery without the gloom.
What to know
The miniseries adapts Christie’s 1929 novel The Seven Dials Mystery, dramatised by Chibnall and directed by Chris Sweeney. Netflix announced it in April 2024, as the first production from Orchid Pictures, and it was retitled Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials in November 2025. Filming took place in mid-2024 around Bristol and Bath, with Badminton House standing in for Chimneys, and in Ronda, Spain. Edward Bluemel plays Jimmy Thesiger, and the supporting cast includes Corey Mylchreest, Nabhaan Rizwan and Alex Macqueen. It premiered on Netflix on 15 January 2026.
If you like it
For a darker Christie, try Sarah Phelps’s The ABC Murders. For more Freeman in a very different mode, the original British The Office.
