Three weeks after the events of Avengers: Endgame, Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) are living as newlyweds in Westview, New Jersey, in what looks like a 1950s sitcom. As the episodes go on, the style moves through the decades of television, from black and white to the 2000s, and the couple's nosy neighbour Agnes (Kathryn Hahn) seems to know more than she lets on.
Why watch WandaVision finds Marvel at its most formally playful: it builds a story about grief out of loving pastiches of The Dick Van Dyke Show, Bewitched, Family Ties and Modern Family, with era-appropriate sets and effects. Olsen, Bettany and Hahn are excellent. It won three Emmys from 23 nominations, one of them for the song "Agatha All Along". Rewarding for Marvel fans and sitcom historians alike.
What to know
Jac Schaeffer created the series and served as head writer, and Matt Shakman directed all nine episodes. It was the first Marvel Studios series for Disney+ and opened Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Filming began in Atlanta in November 2019, paused in March 2020 because of the pandemic and finished in Los Angeles that November. It premiered on 15 January 2021 with two episodes and ended on 5 March.
Teyonah Parris, Randall Park and Kat Dennings join as investigators outside Westview. Wanda’s story continues in the film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022). Two spin-offs complete a trilogy: Agatha All Along, with Hahn, from September 2024, and VisionQuest, with Bettany, from October 2026.
Where to start
Some familiarity with Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame helps. Give the slow, deliberately odd first two episodes a chance; the show reveals its plan from episode three on.
