Why watch McLeod's Daughters turned outback life into prime-time drama and held Australia's top drama spot in its fourth and fifth seasons. It won eight Logie Awards from 41 nominations, including Most Popular Australian Drama Series, and built a devoted following in Canada and the United States. Wide South Australian landscapes, horses, family feuds and romance: it suits anyone who wants a long, absorbing rural saga.

What to know

Posie Graeme-Evans and Caroline Stanton created the series for the Nine Network, where it ran for eight seasons from 8 August 2001 to 31 January 2009. It began as a 1996 telemovie starring Jack Thompson as the sisters’ father, which became the highest-rated telemovie in Australian television history, though the series took several more years to reach air. Most filming took place around Kingsford in South Australia. New Zealand actor Lisa Chappell, cast as Claire, learned to ride and shear sheep during production. In September 2026 Nine announced a revival, set to premiere on Stan in 2027.

Where to start

Season one, episode one: the arrival of Tess and the fight over whether to sell Drover’s Run sets up the sisters’ relationship that drives the early years. With a revival on the way, now is a sensible time to catch up, though eight seasons is a real commitment.
