Seinfeld
Stand-up comedian Jerry Seinfeld plays a version of himself in Manhattan, alongside his neurotic friend George Costanza (Jason Alexander), his ex-girlfriend Elaine Benes (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and his eccentric neighbour Cosmo Kramer (Michael Richards). Together they turn the smallest social disasters, from parking spaces to soup lines, into elaborate catastrophes, and learn nothing along the way.

Why watch The famous show about nothing is really a show about everything people are too polite to say. Its interlocking plots, where three or four small stories collide in the final minutes, influenced a generation of sitcoms. It won the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series and a Peabody Award in 1993. Essential for anyone who loves comedy writing.
What to know
Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld created the series for NBC. The pilot aired on 5 July 1989 as The Seinfeld Chronicles before the title was shortened, and the show ran until 14 May 1998: nine seasons and 180 episodes.
The 1993 Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series came for season four, and the same year brought the Peabody. The supporting world is as quotable as the leads: Jerry’s nemesis Newman, George’s parents, Elaine’s bosses, and a parade of girlfriends and boyfriends who rarely survive an episode. The writing room’s habit of weaving three or four small storylines into one collision became the model for ensemble sitcoms that followed.
Where to start
Season four, in which Jerry and George pitch a sitcom about nothing to NBC. It is the show at its most self-aware and the clearest showcase of its interlocking plotting.
