Julian Fellowes set The Gilded Age in 1880s Manhattan, but very little of what viewers see was shot there. The Russells’ marble halls are Newport, Rhode Island. Many of the brownstone streets are Troy, New York. A good share of the rest comes from the estates of Westchester County. With season four streaming on HBO Max from today, November 1, here is where the first three seasons were filmed, as confirmed by the houses and tourism offices themselves, and what you can actually walk into this month.
Newport: the Russells’ real address
The Preservation Society of Newport County, which runs the Newport Mansions, has published episode-by-episode notes on its role in the series. Its location list is the most detailed primary record of where the show was made.
The Breakers. Used in seasons one and three. The Society says “The Billiard Room at The Breakers is the Russells’ billiard room in their New York mansion,” and the season one finale ball was filmed in the Music Room.

The Elms. Used in all three seasons. In season two, “The Elms debuts as the Russells’ Newport home,” and “The kitchen at The Elms is seen frequently as the Russells’ kitchen.” Mrs. Berwind’s bedroom plays Gladys’s room. For the season three finale, the Society lists the lawn and back terrace, kitchen, front drive, ballroom, green bedroom, library and drawing room, with Bertha’s Newport ball “set in The Elms.”
Marble House. Used in all three seasons. “Consuelo Vanderbilt’s Bedroom in Marble House is George Russell’s bedroom,” and the dining room is where Bertha hosts her dinner for the Duke of Buckingham in season two, episode five.
Chateau-sur-Mer. Used in all three seasons, and the hardest-working house in town. The Society says its stairwell is part of Mamie Fish’s New York house, its dining room hosts Mrs. Fish’s doll tea party, and “the Butternut Bedroom is used for the apartment of man-about-town Oscar van Rhijn.” Other rooms serve as bedrooms for Agnes van Rhijn and the Morrises, and the exterior plays Mrs. Astor’s Newport summer home.
Rosecliff. Used in season one: “The white front façade of Rosecliff is striking as Mrs. Chamberlain’s house in Manhattan.”
Kingscote. Used in season two as the home of the widow Mrs. Blane, whose house Larry Russell renovates.
Hunter House. Listed by the Society as a season one location, without a named scene.
Discover Newport, the city’s tourism body, also says the series “was filmed at and features many Newport Mansion properties.”
Troy: 1882 Manhattan, upstate
The Hart Cluett Museum in Troy says it was one of many city sites chosen for filming, and that during the shoot “Downtown Troy is seemingly” 1882 New York City. The museum’s own house at 57 Second Street was among the places filmed. Its walking tour covers “the many buildings and streets in the historic district” used in seasons one, two and three. The museum does not name individual buildings on those pages, so neither does this guide.
Westchester: the extra mansions
Westchester County said in January 2022 that the production filmed inside and on the grounds of Lyndhurst in Tarrytown, at Glenview at the Hudson River Museum in Yonkers, at Sleepy Hollow Country Club, at the Edith Macy Conference Center in Briarcliff Manor and at Pace University in Pleasantville. Visit Westchester, the county’s tourism and film office, added season two details in 2023: Glenview “served as the interior of Mrs. Astor’s house,” the 1720 Jacob Purdy House in White Plains stood in for the Tuskegee classroom where Marian teaches, and Reid Castle at Manhattanville supplied office and gallery interiors. Lyndhurst returned for season two with more rooms and grounds in use.
