The first full week of November asks for three kinds of nerve: a spy’s, a golfer’s and, if you can get to a theatre, a monster fan’s. Netflix brings back Black Doves on Thursday, Apple TV sends Owen Wilson back to the fairways on Wednesday, and Toho’s Godzilla Minus Zero opens across North America on Friday. Here is the week, day by day, with every Canadian platform checked.

Before the week starts

Canadians reached the second season of North of North before anyone else. Season two launched on CBC TV on Tuesday 8 September, with new episodes on CBC Gem from 9 a.m. ET on each premiere day, and the full season is streaming on CBC Gem now. The rest of the world catches up on Thursday 5 November, when Netflix takes the Iqaluit comedy global. If you are behind, you still have a few days’ head start.

Tuesday 3 November

Bass X Machina · Netflix · Tuesday 3 November

Creator LeSean Thomas sets this animated series in a steampunk West overrun by outlaws, machines and the supernatural, where one father appoints himself judge, jury and executioner to keep his family alive. Brian Tyree Henry and Tati Gabrielle lead the voice cast. Come for the genre collision: a western in which the machines and the supernatural ride in alongside the outlaws.

Wednesday 4 November

Stick season 2 · Apple TV · Wednesday 4 November

Pryce Cahill is betting on himself this time. Owen Wilson’s former pro mounts an improbable comeback, chasing a major that would make him the oldest golfer ever to win one, and Rhea Seehorn joins as Amanda, his new coach. The season opens with two episodes on 4 November, then settles into one a week through 30 December.

The Greatest · Prime Video · Wednesday 4 November

Jaalen Best plays the boxer under both of his names, Cassius Clay and Muhammad Ali, in a series Prime Video pitches as an intimate portrait of the champion, humanitarian and “global icon.” It premieres in more than 240 countries and territories at once, Canada included.

All’s Fair season 2 · Disney+ · Wednesday 4 November

The all-female divorce firm is open for business again. Kim Kardashian, Naomi Watts and Niecy Nash-Betts are back behind the desks, with Glenn Close and Sarah Paulson also in the cast. Season two arrives in Canada on 4 November; in the US it opens with three episodes and runs weekly to a 2 December finale.

Brothers finale · Apple TV · Wednesday 4 November

Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson have spent this comedy playing fictionalized versions of themselves, and Wednesday brings the eighth and final episode. From then, the whole run is there to watch in a sitting or two.

The Gymnasts of Fisherman Colony · CBC Gem · Wednesday 4 November

The Passionate Eye turns to three teenage girls in Pakistan who are chasing competitive gymnastics. Stream it on CBC Gem, or watch at 9 p.m. (9:30 NT) on CBC TV.

Thursday 5 November

Black Doves season 2 · Netflix · Thursday 5 November

The week’s biggest return. Keira Knightley’s spy Helen and Ben Whishaw’s hitman Sam are pulled back together when a ruthless plot involving the Black Doves catches Reed, their handler, played by Sarah Lancashire. The roster grows, too: Ambika Mod, Sam Riley and Neve Campbell, who plays a US defence envoy.

Friday 6 November

Possible Love · Netflix · Friday 6 November

Lee Chang-dong‘s first film since Burning arrives with Venice’s Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize already in hand. Jeon Do-yeon and Sul Kyung-gu lead the story of two married couples whose lives become entangled over the making of a documentary. It streams globally.

Under Siege · Netflix · Friday 6 November

This eight-episode Colombian series lands on the 41st anniversary of the siege of Bogotá’s Palace of Justice, on 6 and 7 November 1985. It is fiction built on true, publicly known events, a line Netflix is careful to draw.

Awkwafina: The Unlikely Cook · Apple TV · Friday 6 November

Nora Lum takes to the road. Across eight episodes, Apple’s docuseries follows her on a cross-country culinary trip as she tries to bring her family’s Chinese restaurant back to life, and it premieres globally. Apple TV also adds episode three of Nocturne the same day, with new episodes every Friday through Christmas Day.

Campus Drivers · Prime Video · Friday 6 November

Carmen Kassovitz and Baptiste Masseline lead six episodes of French young adult romance, adapted from C.S. Quill’s novels, which Amazon says have sold nearly one million copies in France.

CBC Gem’s Friday drop · Friday 6 November

CBC Gem’s Friday haul ranges widely: the Canadian premiere of the British comedy Ann Droid, about a widow saddled with a care robot she never asked for; all three seasons of the Australian crime comedy Mr Inbetween; Mathieu Denis’s Québec drama Gagne ton ciel (The Cost of Heaven); and Ed and Ryu: Mad About Seafood, which pairs chef Edward Lee with actor Ryu Soo-young.

Godzilla Minus Zero · Theatres · Friday 6 November

Takashi Yamazaki follows Godzilla Minus One with a new chapter that opens in Japan on 3 November and in North America on 6 November. GKIDS is handling the North American run and calls it a “wide theatrical release,” so check what is playing near you.

Sunday 8 November

HBO’s The Gilded Age opened its eight-episode fourth season in the US on Sunday 1 November. There is no Canadian date for season four yet. Crave carried the first three seasons, and the guide to how HBO reaches Canada explains which plan you need.
