Where Peaky Blinders Was Really Filmed

Tommy Shelby's Birmingham was mostly Liverpool, Bradford and the Black Country, and these are the confirmed locations to visit as the sequel series films in Birmingham.

Peaky Blinders is a Birmingham story, but for most of its six series the Shelbys did their business elsewhere. Netflix‘s own location guide puts the gang’s streets, offices and churches in Liverpool, Bradford, Leeds, Haworth, the Wirral and the Black Country. Now the story is going home: the sequel series, which moves to postwar Birmingham in the early 1950s, is filming “in and around Digbeth Loc. Studios in Birmingham,” according to Netflix.

Here is where the series was shot, confirmed by Netflix and, in Bradford’s case, by Screen Yorkshire, with what each place played on screen. Anything not on those pages has been left out.

Liverpool and the Wirral

Powis Street, Liverpool. The Shelbys’ home turf of Watery Lane was filmed on this Liverpool street. Netflix says Powis Street hosts “the very first shot of the series,” which makes it the obvious first stop for anyone retracing Tommy’s walk.

Liverpool Cathedral. The cathedral stands in for Tommy Shelby’s regular place of worship, per Netflix’s guide.

St George’s Hall, Liverpool. The hall has done double duty. Netflix says it served as “a fancy party venue” in series three and as “the site of a fascist rally” in series six.

Port Sunlight Village, Wirral. Aunt Polly’s house was filmed in Port Sunlight Village on the Wirral, according to Netflix.

Bradford, Leeds and Haworth

West Yorkshire supplied much of Tommy’s rise from bookmaker to politician.

Cater Street, Little Germany, Bradford. Tommy’s office and boardroom, and the boxing scenes, were filmed in what Netflix calls “an old Victorian warehouse building in the city center of Bradford.” Screen Yorkshire lists Peaky Blinders among the productions that have filmed in Little Germany, which it describes as “an area of particular historical interest in Bradford”: 85 buildings put up between 1855 and 1890, 55 of them listed, built as export warehouses by European merchants. The district is a conservation area at the heart of Bradford, a UNESCO City of Film, and Screen Yorkshire gives its address as Peckover Street, BD1 5BD. Gentleman Jack and Testament of Youth are on the same list of productions.

Bradford City Hall. When Tommy becomes an MP, his Westminster offices are in Bradford City Hall, according to Netflix.

Undercliffe Cemetery, Bradford. The show’s cemetery scenes in its post-First World War setting were filmed here.

Leeds Town Hall. Netflix says the town hall doubled as an art gallery and as a backdrop to Tommy’s political work.

Keighley and Worth Valley Railway, Haworth. The confrontation between Grace and Inspector Campbell was filmed on this railway in Haworth.

The Black Country and Arley Hall

Black Country Living Museum, Dudley. Netflix describes this Dudley attraction as “a 26-acre open-air living museum,” and it provided several sets. Its canal arm became Charlie Strong’s yard, the Canal Street bridge was Ada and Freddie’s secret meeting place, St James Academy was the scene of a murder, and several of its workshop buildings also appear.

Arley Hall and Gardens. Tommy Shelby’s grand home was filmed at Arley Hall and Gardens in Arley, per Netflix’s guide.

Birmingham, at last

The sequel series picks up after Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, the 1940-set film directed by Tom Harper that has been streaming on Netflix since March. Steven Knight writes it, Mike Barker and Anna Zackrisson direct, and it runs to two six-episode seasons, made for the BBC in the UK and Netflix in the rest of the world. Jamie Bell plays Duke Shelby and Charlie Heaton plays Charles Shelby, with Ned Dennehy and Packy Lee returning as Charlie Strong and Johnny Dogs. “The new generation of Shelbys have taken the wheel, and it will be a hell of a ride,” Knight says in Netflix’s announcement. No release date has been set.

Netflix has not published locations for The Immortal Man itself, so the film’s settings are not listed here. Its cast, led by Cillian Murphy, Rebecca Ferguson and Tim Roth, also includes Barry Keoghan and Stephen Graham.

Planning a trip

The locations fall into three easy clusters. Liverpool’s cathedral, St George’s Hall and Powis Street can be covered in a day, with Port Sunlight a short hop over the river. Bradford’s Little Germany, City Hall and Undercliffe Cemetery sit close together, with Leeds and Haworth within reach of the same base. The Black Country Living Museum works as a day out on its own. Check opening times and access with each site before travelling, and remember that a filming location is not always a visitor attraction.
