Why watch Think of it as a hip hop answer to Whose Line Is It Anyway?, with roast battles in place of polite scene work. Running since 2005, it has survived a six year break and moves between MTV, MTV2 and VH1, and Cannon has captained a team throughout. Best for fans of fast, rowdy, unscripted comedy who want something to dip into rather than follow.

What to know

Nick Cannon created Wild ‘N Out and has hosted it since its MTV debut on 28 July 2005. The first four seasons ran on MTV until 2007. After a six year hiatus, the show returned on MTV2 in July 2013, and its fifth season premiere was the highest rated telecast in that channel’s history. It moved back to MTV for season eight in August 2016, and in 2019 expanded to VH1 as well.

The team format has changed many times: Red against Black, Platinum against Gold, and later Old School against New School, with Cannon leading the veterans. Since season two, teams have competed for a championship belt. Each episode also features a musical guest, who sometimes judges the final round.

Where to start

There is no story to follow, so any episode works. The MTV2 revival seasons from 2013 onward are a good place to begin: that is when the revival’s larger regular cast took shape.
