Years before the events of The Terminal List, Navy SEAL Ben Edwards is pulled from the battlefield into the shadow world of CIA operations, where missions are deniable and loyalties are negotiable. Taylor Kitsch returns as Edwards, with Tom Hopper as his commanding officer Raife Hastings and Chris Pratt back as James Reece.
Why watch It gives Kitsch's Ben Edwards, a supporting player in the first series, the backstory he was missing, and moves the franchise from a revenge plot into espionage, with operations across Europe and the Middle East. Critics were warmer than they had been toward the original. It suits fans of military thrillers and Jack Carr's novels, and works for newcomers too.
What to know
Jack Carr, who wrote the 2018 novel The Terminal List, created Dark Wolf with David DiGilio, who serves as showrunner. Antoine Fuqua is among the executive producers, alongside Kitsch and Pratt. The prequel was announced in February 2023, took its title in January 2024 and began filming on 13 March 2024, largely in Hungary, including Budapest, Esztergom and Szentendre.
The supporting cast includes Dar Salim, Luke Hemsworth, Robert Wisdom and Rona-Lee Shimon, with guest turns from Michael Ealy, Betty Gilpin and Pablo Schreiber. Prime Video released the first three of seven episodes on 27 August 2025, with the rest weekly through 24 September.
Where to start
No homework required: as a prequel, it can be watched before or after The Terminal List. Watching the original first adds weight to where Edwards ends up, but starting here gives the story in chronological order.
