Why watch James Gunn takes a punchline character from his film and finds real feeling under the bluster, while keeping the jokes crude and the violence cartoonish. John Cena commits completely, and the deadpan dance number that opens every episode set the tone for a show that is happy to be ridiculous. Best for adult viewers who like their superhero stories irreverent.
What to know
James Gunn created Peacemaker for HBO Max as a spin-off of his 2021 film The Suicide Squad, in which John Cena first played the character. Gunn wrote every episode of the eight-episode first season, which premiered in January 2022. Jennifer Holland, Steve Agee and Danielle Brooks lead the ensemble around Cena, with Freddie Stroma as his eager sidekick Vigilante and Robert Patrick as his father.
The second season arrived in August 2025 and is part of the new DC Universe that Gunn now oversees with Peter Safran, so it connects to the 2025 Superman film. Frank Grillo joins as Rick Flag Sr.
Where to start
The first episode, ideally after The Suicide Squad, which explains how Peacemaker ended up in hospital. Viewers who skip the film can still follow along, since the show recaps what matters. Do not skip the opening credits.
