Our take

Netflix's revival of the Bravo makeover format sends five experts, the Fab Five, to help one person per episode rethink their home, wardrobe, grooming, food and outlook. The original lineup was Antoni Porowski on food, Tan France on fashion, Jonathan Van Ness on grooming, Karamo Brown on culture and Bobby Berk on design, with Jeremiah Brent later taking over design.

Why watch Where older makeover shows played for humiliation, this one is built on listening, and the transformations are as much about confidence, family and grief as about haircuts. It won the Emmy for outstanding structured reality program several times, and each move to a new city gives it fresh texture. Ideal one episode at a time, on an evening when the news is too much.

What to know

The series is a reboot of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, which ran on Bravo from 2003 to 2007. Netflix launched the new version in February 2018 with a new cast and a broader brief: the heroes are not only straight men, and episodes spend as much time on the person’s relationships and self-worth as on the renovation.

The first two seasons were filmed in and around Atlanta, Georgia, before the show moved to Kansas City for seasons three and four, and later to other American cities. A four-episode special, Queer Eye: We’re in Japan!, took the format to Tokyo in 2019. Berk left before the ninth season, and Brent, an interior designer, joined in his place. Each member of the Fab Five has built a profile beyond the show through books, products and other television work.

Where to start

Season one shows the format in its first form and introduces all five hosts properly. After that, pick a season by city: the episodes are self-contained, so there is no wrong place to jump in.
