Friday’s new films cover a lot of ground: a video game brought back to its 1990s roots, a survival thriller set inside a whale, a new take on Jane Austen and, for Canadian audiences, the film that won this year’s Palme d’Or. Here is what opens on Friday 16 Oct, with dates and details from the studios and distributors. Opening-weekend grosses are not in yet.

Street Fighter

Paramount Pictures lists Street Fighter in theatres from 16 Oct. Kitao Sakurai directs, and the studio’s synopsis sets the story in 1993: estranged fighters Ryu and Ken Masters are pulled back into combat when Chun-Li recruits them for the next World Warrior Tournament, and a deadly conspiracy forces them to confront each other and their past.

The cast mixes actors, wrestlers and a rapper. Andrew Koji plays Ryu, Noah Centineo plays Ken and Callina Liang plays Chun-Li. Joe “Roman Reigns” Anoai is Akuma, David Dastmalchian is M. Bison and Cody Rhodes is Guile, with Jason Momoa as Blanka, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson as Balrog, Vidyut Jammwal as Dhalsim, Andrew Schulz as Dan Hibiki and Eric André as Don Sauvage.

Whalefall

From 20th Century Studios, Whalefall is rated PG-13 and opens the same day. Brian Duffield directs from a script he wrote with Daniel Kraus, adapted from Kraus’s novel. The studio’s synopsis: after his father dies, Jay Gardiner (Austin Abrams) dives off California’s Central Coast to find his remains and is swallowed by a sperm whale, with about an hour of oxygen and only his father’s lessons to get him out. Josh Brolin plays the father, Mitt, with Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy and Emily Rudd. Brian Grazer is among the producers.

Sense and Sensibility

Focus Features and Working Title‘s adaptation is “only in theaters October 16” in the US, according to the Focus page; when Focus first set dates in November 2025, it listed 11 Sept. UK audiences have had it since 25 Sept. BAFTA nominee Georgia Oakley directs from a screenplay by novelist Diana Reid. Daisy Edgar-Jones leads a cast that includes Esmé Creed-Miles, Caitríona Balfe, Frank Dillane, George MacKay and Fiona Shaw.

Fjord (Canada)

Elevation Pictures opens Cristian Mungiu’s Fjord in Canada on 16 Oct. The Festival de Cannes lists it as the winner of the 2026 Palme d’Or. Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve play a devout Romanian-Norwegian couple who move to a remote village; when their teenage daughter arrives at school with bruises, the community starts asking questions about the family’s home schooling. It runs 146 minutes.

Also new: Tenzing, from the cinema to the sofa

Apple’s Tenzing, with Tom Hiddleston as Edmund Hillary and Genden Phuntsok as Tenzing Norgay, opened in select theatres on 9 Oct and streams on Apple TV from 16 Oct, so viewers can choose a big screen or home this weekend.
