If your comedy diet is mostly clips on your phone, this fall is a good time to sit through a full hour. Between early September and the end of October, Netflix has three new stand-up specials and CBC brings back its long-running festival showcase. Here is the lineup, in order, with the Canadian streaming details.
Already out: Stavros Halkias, Uncle Stav
The first of the fall hours is already streaming. Stavros Halkias: Uncle Stav arrived on Netflix on 8 Sep. It is Halkias’s second Netflix special, and the Netflix Media Center’s logline says he returns “with a bit more wisdom to share after becoming an uncle this year.” Halkias was among the names Netflix touted for upcoming specials at its comedy brunch in May, alongside Nate Bargatze and Leanne Morgan, whose hours have not been dated yet.
Just landed: Mojo Brookzz, I Know You Lying
Mojo Brookzz: I Know You Lying is the newest arrival, listed by Netflix for 6 Oct. It is the Chicago-born comic’s first Netflix special. Netflix Tudum says Brookzz, born Dyon Brooks, has 12 years in comedy, has appeared on Wild ‘N Out and Tyler Perry’s Miss Governor, and toured 40 cities. The hour was filmed at Atlanta’s Center Stage Theater and directed by Mike Lavin. Netflix’s description covers freaky partners, BBL culture and his niece’s big coming-out present. Tudum’s own verdict: “raucous as hell.”
Tuesday night: CBC Halifax Comedy Fest
The Canadian entry is a festival, not a single hour. CBC Halifax Comedy Fest returns for season 29 on Tuesday 13 Oct at 9:30 p.m. on CBC TV, with six half-hour episodes, according to CBC. Under CBC’s standard rule for its fall series, the first episode streams on CBC Gem from 9 a.m. ET on premiere day, with new episodes weekly after that.
Trent McClellan hosts. CBC Gem lists the season’s performers as Alonzo Bodden, Allie Pearse, Lachlan Patterson, Ryan Belleville, Shaun Majumder, Cassie Cao, Ted Morris, Arthur Simeon, Ophira Eisenberg and Kevin Bozeman. Earlier seasons are on CBC Gem too, if you want to warm up.
The same night offers a CBC comedy block for anyone who wants more: This Hour Has 22 Minutes is back for season 34, Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on CBC TV, per CBC’s fall schedule.
Closing the month: Zainab Johnson, Toxically Optimistic
The last of the run is Zainab Johnson: Toxically Optimistic, dated by Netflix for 27 Oct. Netflix’s synopsis promises a gun-related revelation, a Tesla crisis and Johnson’s habit of finding the upside in everything. The special is rated TV-MA.
How to plan it
The Halifax episodes are the shortest commitment, at 30 minutes each, and suit a weeknight. The Netflix specials are full sets you can start any time. Johnson’s lands the week of Halloween, a lighter option for anyone not in the mood for horror.
