Our take

Ruby Rossi (Emilia Jones) is the only hearing member of a deaf fishing family in Gloucester, Massachusetts, and their link to the hearing world on the boat and at the dock. When her choir teacher, played by Eugenio Derbez, spots her talent and pushes her toward a Berklee audition, she has to choose between her family's business and a future of her own.

Why watch It made history as the first film from a streaming service to win Best Picture, and Troy Kotsur became the first deaf man to win an acting Oscar. It earns its tears honestly, with deaf actors in the deaf roles and much of the family's dialogue in American Sign Language. A warm, funny choice for family viewing.

What to know

Siân Heder wrote and directed CODA, an English-language remake of the 2014 French-Belgian film La Famille Bélier. The title stands for child of deaf adults. Marlee Matlin, who plays Ruby’s mother Jackie, was the first actor cast and pushed for deaf actors to fill the other deaf roles; Kotsur and Daniel Durant play Ruby’s father and brother.

The film premiered at Sundance on 28 January 2021 and won the U.S. Grand Jury Prize, the audience award and a special jury prize for its ensemble, along with the directing award for Heder. Apple bought worldwide rights for a festival-record US$25 million and released it on Apple TV+ on 13 August 2021. At the 94th Academy Awards it won all three of its nominations: Best Picture, Supporting Actor for Kotsur and Adapted Screenplay for Heder. Kotsur also became the first deaf person to win a BAFTA, and the cast won the SAG ensemble award.
