Blade Runner 2099 takes place in a Los Angeles that Prime Video describes as “reborn, just not by humanity,” 50 years after Blade Runner 2049. The cameras, though, were in Central Europe. The eight-episode Prime Video series, which premieres in full on Wednesday 25 November in more than 240 countries and territories, was made in the Czech Republic, on Prague soundstages and at a church, city districts, quarries and a former coal mine.

The Czech Film Commission has published the production’s location list, which makes this one of the better-documented shoots of the year. Here is what it confirms, and which of the places you can see for yourself.

The shoot, by the numbers

Cameras rolled from 30 June 2024 to 16 April 2025, over 114 filming days, with the main blocks running from July to August and from September to November 2024. The series was produced by Alcon Entertainment and Scott Free, with Prague’s Film United handling local production services; Ridley Scott, director of the original film, is an executive producer. The commission puts the spend at CZK 1.8 billion (€72 million) and counts it among the most expensive projects in Czech audiovisual history.

Michelle Yeoh, Hunter Schafer, Dimitri Abold and Lewis Gribben are the series regulars, with Yeoh as Olwen and Schafer as Cora. Silka Luisa created the series and is showrunner; Jonathan van Tulleken directs the first two episodes.

Barrandov and Jordan Studios

The stage work happened at Barrandov Studios in the Hlubočepy district of Prague 5, where the production spent 73 days, and at Jordan Studios in Prague. Barrandov’s ateliers date to 1931 and more than 5,000 Czech and international films have been made there since. Prague City Tourism lists guided tours of its costume and prop stores, but notes that the studio and its exhibitions are closed to the public until further notice, so check before planning a visit.

Prague on location

The production list names six Prague locations: St. Gabriel Church, KOH-I-NOOR, Háje, Strahov, Hradčanská and Bubeneč.

The Church of St Gabriel is the easiest for visitors. The neo-Romanesque basilica in Smíchov, at the back of the Kinský Garden on Holečkova street, was completed in 1891, with interior decoration in the Beuron Art School style continuing until 1917. Roman Catholic Mass is held on Sundays at 11:15 (not in July or August), and the normally closed historic halls open only on guided tours; dates are posted at beuron.cz.

The others are neighbourhoods and sites in the working city rather than visitor attractions, and the production has not said which streets or buildings it used in each. Treat them as a walk, not a pilgrimage.

Beyond Prague: a mine, quarries and water

The most striking entry on the list is the Mayrau Open-Air Mining Museum in Vinařice, near Kladno. Prague City Tourism describes it as the only accessible mine in the whole Kladno-Rakovník coal basin; the open-air museum opened on the site in 1994, and tours, many of them led by former miners, are built around a reconstruction of a mine’s last working day. From November to March it opens daily from 9:00 to 15:00, and from April to October from 9:00 to 17:00.

Beyond that, the commission’s list takes in Lázně Toušeň; Borek and Homolák quarries; Mělník, where the production used the power plant; Horní Počáply; Vranné nad Vltavou and the Slapy reservoir; and Jablonec nad Nisou. A working power plant and quarries are not tourist sites, so plan on viewing them from public land only.

Before you go

Neither the commission nor the announcement material ties individual scenes to these places, so the matching game starts on 25 November. For a first look at the Czech-built future, our story on the latest trailer has the details.
