Few British thrillers have asked their audience to hold as much in their heads as The Devil’s Hour, and the reward for that patience arrives on Friday 4 December. Prime Video has confirmed that the five-part third series of Tom Moran’s supernatural thriller will launch on that date, with all episodes released at once in more than 240 countries and territories.

The first look, released on 3 November, comes with a synopsis that opens on a line fans will recognise as a statement of intent: “Life is a scratched record, looping, over and over again.”

Where the story picks up

Series three finds Lucy Chambers, played by Jessica Raine, reborn and haunted by memories of past lives. She forms an uneasy alliance with her former adversary, the serial killer Gideon Shepherd, played by Peter Capaldi, to hunt a child-killer who has eluded her across multiple lifetimes. Benjamin Chivers plays Isaac.

The cast also includes Nikesh Patel, Phil Dunster, Meera Syal and Saffron Hocking. Dunster is best known for Ted Lasso and Rooster, Syal for Goodness Gracious Me and Yesterday, and Hocking for Top Boy, a spread of comedy and crime credits that suits a series forever shifting between the domestic and the uncanny.

Viewers who know Capaldi best as the Time Lord in Doctor Who will find him in very different territory here, as a serial killer turned reluctant ally.

Who makes it

Moran created and writes the series. Sue Vertue, Moran and Steven Moffat are executive producers, Lawrence Till produces, and Johnny Allan and Shaun James Grant direct. The series is a Hartswood Films production and a UK Original for Prime Video, which says the show has been nominated for an International Emmy.

Why the date matters

An early December, all-at-once release gives the series a clear run before the Christmas schedules take over British television. At five episodes it is a manageable commitment, and viewers who need a refresher have a month to work through the first two series, both of which are already on Prime Video. Those looking further ahead on the platform will find Blade Runner 2099 among its other big end-of-year titles.
