Our take
A true crime documentary series from A&E that picks up where The First 48 leaves off. Each episode returns to a homicide case from the parent series and follows it from arrest through trial and into the aftermath, with interviews with detectives, prosecutors, defence lawyers, victims' families and sometimes the accused.
Why watch The First 48 ends at the arrest; this series asks what happened next, which is where much of the real story lies. Some episodes include courtroom footage, and the emphasis on families and long-term consequences gives it more weight than a standard case recap. Suited to true crime viewers who want the legal process, not just the chase.
What to know
After the First 48 is a spin-off of The First 48, the A&E series that premiered in 2004 and follows homicide detectives in the critical first two days of an investigation. The follow-up series began in 2008 and shares the parent show’s narration by Dion Graham, whose voice has become part of the franchise’s identity.
Episodes are case-led rather than serialized: each revisits a crime from The First 48 and traces the prosecution, the verdict and the effect on those left behind. Outside the US it has aired on Crime+Investigation.
Where to start
Any episode works on its own, but the experience is richer if you first watch the original The First 48 episode about the same case, then see how it played out in court.
