Our take

When 11-year-old Danny Latimer is found dead on the beach below the cliffs, the Dorset town of Broadchurch turns in on itself. Detective Inspector Alec Hardy, a newcomer with a troubled past, and local Detective Sergeant Ellie Miller, who knows every family involved, lead the investigation. David Tennant and Olivia Colman star, with Jodie Whittaker and Andrew Buchan as Danny's parents.

Why watch Broadchurch treats a murder mystery as a study of grief, suspicion and press attention in a place where everyone is a neighbour. Tennant and Colman's prickly partnership drew particular praise, and Chris Chibnall wrote every episode, which gives the three series an unusually consistent voice. For viewers who like British crime drama with emotional weight and a satisfying, planned ending.

What to know

Chris Chibnall created and wrote all 24 episodes, produced by Kudos with Imaginary Friends. It ran on ITV for three series: the first premiered on 4 March 2013, the second on 5 January 2015 and the third, and last, on 27 February 2017. Chibnall planned it as a trilogy from the start, and drew on Twin Peaks and Murder One as influences.

The setting borrows from Thomas Hardy country. The town’s name combines two Dorset hamlets, Broadoak and Whitchurch, the lead detective shares the novelist’s surname, and the police force is Wessex Police. The Jurassic Coast, near where Chibnall lived, provides the cliffs and beach. Colman and Tennant were both offered their roles without an audition.

Series two follows the court case alongside an old investigation that haunts Hardy. Series three, built around an assault at a birthday party, brings in Julie Hesmondhalgh as Trish Winterman.

Where to start

Begin with series one. It was written to stand alone, and the later series depend on it.
