Patrick Stewart in Logan
Patrick Stewart’s last full performance as Charles Xavier, in James Mangold’s 2017 film, is unlike any of the earlier ones. Set in 2029, it finds Xavier in his nineties, living with a degenerative brain disease that causes seizures so powerful they can kill, hidden near the Mexican border and cared for by Hugh Jackman’s Logan and Stephen Merchant’s Caliban. The arrival of Laura, a young mutant played by Dafne Keen, sets them on the road. Stewart plays Xavier frail, funny and frightened, and the film gives him a final night of peace with a farming family before his death. It was billed as both actors’ farewell to the roles, and earned an Oscar nomination for its screenplay.
