Netflix‘s political drama returns on Thursday 15 Oct, and if the end of season three has faded, it is worth a refresher: the new season picks up a story in which almost every marriage and alliance on screen is under strain. Here is what Netflix has said about season four of The Diplomat, where things stood when the last season ended, and how to get up to speed before Thursday.
Where season three left things
Netflix sums up the series as a sharp, principled US diplomat, Kate Wyler (Keri Russell), juggling her high-stakes role as ambassador to the UK and her strained marriage to an ambitious political strategist, Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell). By the end of season three, Hal was vice president under President Grace Penn (Allison Janney), who took office after the death of the former president, played by Michael McKean.
According to Netflix, the season three finale left Kate and Hal’s marriage looking almost stable, just as Kate began to suspect that Hal and Grace had double-crossed her. Meanwhile First Gentleman Todd Penn (Bradley Whitford) had noticed how close his wife and Hal had become.
What season four is about
Netflix’s synopsis opens with a line that sets the tone: “In Season 4 of The Diplomat, two marriages threaten to eat each other alive.”
The setup, per Netflix: one catastrophic moment shatters the fragile peace Kate brokered between the US and the UK, along with the marriage she is trying to save. While she tries to contain the damage, Grace and Hal’s plan to steal Russia’s most powerful weapon threatens to push the United States toward war. Kate and Todd, whom Netflix calls “at best an uneasy pair”, team up to stop them.
Creator and showrunner Debora Cahn frames the new season around four people. “This season is built on the foursome that is Kate, Hal, Grace, and Todd,” she told Netflix, describing them as “two couples strapped together in one car on a crumbling roller coaster.”
The season four trailer leans into the geopolitics. In it, Kate accuses the Penn White House of a covert military incursion into an ally’s territory, telling them “It’s over the line,” to which Chief of Staff Billie Appiah replies, “The line moves.”
Who is back
Netflix has confirmed the core cast:
- Keri Russell as Ambassador Kate Wyler. Russell is also an executive producer.
- Rufus Sewell as Vice President Hal Wyler.
- Allison Janney as President Grace Penn, now a series regular.
- Bradley Whitford as First Gentleman Todd Penn, now a series regular.
- Nana Mensah as White House Chief of Staff Billie Appiah, promoted to series regular for season four.
- Ato Essandoh and Ali Ahn, both listed by Netflix among the season’s stars.
Janney and Whitford previously worked together on The West Wing, a point Netflix makes itself. Executive producer Janice Williams has told Tudum that Whitford “was the perfect addition to what is already a dream cast.”
Asked what fans should expect, Cahn was blunt. “There’s plenty to worry about,” she told Tudum. “It can be pretty chilling when you see who takes power and get the sense that they may be horrifically misusing it.” Russell, for her part, promises the “unraveling will be fun.”
What Netflix has not said
Netflix’s own pages do not list an episode count or a release time for season four, and the streamer has not named any new cast members beyond those above. Its announcements give only the date.
How to catch up
All three earlier seasons are streaming on Netflix now. If you need help keeping the titles straight, Netflix’s Tudum site has published a plain-language guide to the show’s diplomatic jobs and political positions, which is useful for the ambassador-versus-chief-of-staff questions the show raises. It has also posted a recap of the season three finale with Cahn.
Season three is the essential one: it sets up the Penn presidency, the Wylers’ changed status and the alliance between Grace and Hal that drives the new episodes.
For Sewell fans, he has a second Netflix role coming soon. He plays Mr. Bennet in the streamer’s Pride and Prejudice limited series, which arrives on 3 Dec.
