Stan has found its New Year’s Day habit, and it is a grim one. For the third time since 2023, Black Snow will open the year on the service: season three premieres on Friday 1 January 2027 with a double episode, followed by new episodes weekly. Travis Fimmel returns as Detective James Cormack, the cold case investigator who keeps finding that the past in regional Queensland has not finished with anyone.

The difference this time is that the case is his own family’s. Stan released a first teaser and the premiere date on 4 November, Australian time.

A brother in the dock

The new season moves the action to tropical Far North Queensland, and it was made there: cameras rolled in Cairns in April, and it is the largest series yet filmed at Screen Queensland Studios, Cairns. Cormack’s long-lost brother Ritchie, played by George Mason, is about to stand trial for the 1999 murder of his best friend, Liam Knox, whose family runs a charter boat business. Cormack takes on what Stan frames as the hardest cold case of his career, with everything that implies for a detective investigating a crime his brother is accused of.

For returning viewers, the setup closes a loop. Season two, which premiered on New Year’s Day 2025, ran Cormack’s investigation into the 2003 disappearance of Zoe Jacobs alongside his search for the younger brother who went missing when they were children. Season one, on New Year’s Day 2023, began with a time capsule in the fictional town of Ashford, North Queensland, and a letter from Isabel Baker, a teenager murdered in 1994.

Who is in it

Fimmel and Mason are joined by new cast members Lee Tiger Halley, Caroline Craig, Aaron Jeffery, Samson Alston, Rose Riley, Wayne Blair and Charmaine Bingwa. The season again runs six episodes.

Series creator Lucas Taylor writes with Beatrix Christian and executive produces. Daniel Nettheim, Christiaan Van Vuuren and Fimmel himself direct, and Fimmel is also an executive producer alongside Rosemary Blight, Ben Grant and Taylor for Goalpost Pictures. Milly Olrog produces, Rob Marsh is director of photography, and Donna Chang and Andy Ryan are executive producers for Stan.

The series is produced in association with All3Media International and AMC Global Media, and in association with Screen NSW, which also supports post, digital and visual effects. Screen Queensland provides financial support through the Queensland Government’s Production Attraction Strategy.

How to catch up

Seasons one and two are streaming on Stan now, six episodes apiece, which leaves eight weeks to get through 12 episodes before the premiere. Starting at season one matters more than usual here: the brother storyline has been building since the first season, and season three is where it lands.

Black Snow sits in a busy local run for Stan, which has already brought back The Assassin and launched Hamish Blake’s Unskilled Adult. For everything else arriving in the meantime, see what is new on streaming in Australia this November.

Where to watch

  • Australia: Stan, from Friday 1 January 2027 with two episodes, then weekly. Seasons one and two are streaming now.
  • New Zealand, Canada, US, UK: Stan has not announced an international home for season three.
