Our take

When Dipper finds a journal cataloguing the town's paranormal residents, the summer turns into an investigation.

Why watch It works both as a funny kids' cartoon and as a serialized mystery full of hidden clues and ciphers, which is why viewers of all ages kept decoding it. It won two Emmys, three Annies and a BAFTA Children's Award, and its two seasons form a complete story with an ending its creator chose. Ideal for families and for fans of Twin Peaks or The X-Files.

What to know

Alex Hirsch created the series for Disney Channel and Disney XD, and voices Grunkle Stan, the handyman Soos and the villain, Bill Cipher. He has named Twin Peaks, The X-Files and The Simpsons as early influences. The show premiered on 15 June 2012 and ran for two seasons until 15 February 2016. Linda Cardellini voices Wendy, the Mystery Shack’s teenage cashier, and J. K. Simmons joins in season two as Stanford Pines, Stan’s long-lost twin and the author of the journals.

In November 2015 Hirsch announced that the second season would be the last, saying the show was being finished rather than cancelled. It was Disney XD’s highest-rated show in 2015 and early 2016. The story has continued in print, with a replica of Journal 3 (2016), the graphic novel Gravity Falls: Lost Legends (2018) and the novel The Book of Bill (2024).

Where to start

Watch from the pilot, in order. Early episodes look like standalone monster-of-the-week stories, but clues planted there pay off in season two.
